My Climate Reality Leadership Training by Jamie Schectman

Earlier this month, I had the distinct honor of attending The Climate Reality Project’s Leadership Corps training in Denver, Colorado.

Al Gore founded The Climate Reality Project in 2011, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to catalyze a global solution to the climate crisis by making urgent action a necessity across every level of society.

The goal of the conference is to provide attendees intensive training in climate science, communications and organizing to better tell the story of climate change. Equally as important, I left the conference fired up and inspired to leverage my position within the ski industry to move climate change to the forefront, which is without a doubt the biggest threat of our lifetime.

Attended by 972 people from 32 different countries, the three day event was easily the best conference I’ve ever attended. There was an excellent blend of talks, panel discussions and break out sessions. My favorite part was a two hour slide show by Mr Gore, which extensively documented the various aspects of climate change including some slides from as recent as the previous week.

As you might imagine, there were some discussions about President Trump and his new administration. Climate Reality Project CEO Ken Berlin stated that even though the federal government is likely to change environmental policy, at the local and state level, progress will continue towards transitioning to a clean energy economy.

Mr Gore reminded us that “Things take a really long time, and then they just happen.” He used the example of the Civil Rights movement and felt we were right on the cusp of eliminating our dependency on fossil fuels. Currently 75% of all emissions are derived from energy production and now that solar energy is cost competitive in many parts in the world, the Clean Energy Revolution is upon us!

Mark your calendars because An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power will be premiering world wide on the weekend of July 28-29, 2017. All profits from both the original An Inconvenient Truth and the forthcoming sequel are donated to the Climate Reality Project.

The Climate Leadership Reality Corps are held three or four times a year. To attend, you must apply and be accepted and the whole event is free, thank you Mr Gore! To date, there have been 44 trainings with over 10,000 graduates. If you are a Climate Change Activist looking for gain tools and information to be more effective, I highly suggest applying to become a Climate Reality Leader.
